The Practice & Clearing Reactions
The Practice
A common concern I hear from clients is how to fit the practice into their day—especially when exercises are ideally done before eating or at least 90 minutes after a meal. Establishing a consistent routine is key when beginning your breathing practice. Setting aside specific times throughout the day helps turn it into a natural habit rather than something you have to remember.
Ideal moments include:
• Upon waking – before breakfast, when the body is calm.
• Before lunch – especially useful if you work, an easy moment to pause.
• After work or the gym – when you’ve arrived home and can settle.
• Before dinner – another natural pause point in the day.
• Before bed – to wind down and prepare for sleep.
These are highly recommended, but you can adjust based on your daily rhythm. The key is consistency.
Also remember the “double line” approach taught in class as a simple and effective way to save time.
Clearing Reactions & What is Happening Inside Your Body?
With practice, your CO2 tolerance increases, and your blood vessels open up. This improves circulation, which:
-
Brings more blood flow to areas that previously had low circulation.
-
Mobilises “stored” material (toxins, waste products) into the bloodstream so it can be excreted.
-
Excretion happens through the skin (sweat), lungs, liver, and kidneys.
This can sometimes cause temporary discomfort.
This is when we can experience Clearing Reactions (Detox Responses).
-
A clearing reaction is when old symptoms flare up briefly as circulation improves and waste is released.
-
They are usually mild and short-lived (3–4 days).
-
Examples: a stuffy nose returning, mild fatigue, or old
symptoms resurfacing.
How to handle them:
-
Drink plenty of fluids (8–10 glasses daily, more if active or in summer).
-
Rest and support your body.
-
Remember: in this gentle approach, strong reactions are not expected. If discomfort is significant, we simply adjust your breathing practice.
-
If mild → observe, hydrate, and continue gently.
-
If uncomfortable → contact me to tweak the practice.
Everyone responds differently—some feel nothing, others notice small shifts, some experience large shifts and reactions. All are normal.
